Invented by Andrew Hallidie, a Scottish engineer and wire rope manufacturer, the cable car was inspired by horses struggling up a steep San Francisco hill, slick from fog. The first cable car began operation in 1873. Today, San Francisco has 38 cable cars in its fleet. More information is available at the Cable Car Museum.

Alcatraz
Photo: John Martini

Alcatraz

No visit to the Bay Area is complete without time spent on the Rock, one of San Francisco's most popular (and notorious) attractions. Rich in history, Alcatraz Island offers a close-up look at the site of the first lighthouse and U.S.-built fort on the West Coast, the infamous federal penitentiary long off-limits to the public, and the 18-month occupation of Indians of All Tribes, after which the official U.S. government policy became that of Indian self-determination.

Please note that Cavallo Point guests must purchase Alcatraz tickets on their own. To avoid standing in lines, we suggest using the official website for detailed information and to print tickets in advance. Tickets to this very popular attraction often sell out, so we recommend you book your visit well in advance. The tour lasts a minimum of 2-2.5 hours.
