A course for the inquisitive beginner, the advanced professional, anyone wishing to expand creative potential
Thursday, October 23 through Sunday, October 26, 2008
About the Artists' Retreat Course
An Artists' Retreat is a concentrated art course designed to encourage instinctive, confident creativity. Within a creative community, students will experience the unfolding of their unique style and palette, and explore the wonders of a wide array of the finest pigments, pencils, papers and brushes. Through drawing and composing, painting and layering mixtures of mediums, personalized instruction and group discussion, we will use both experimental and traditional techniques to guide our travels through realism, impressionism and into the realm of magic.
We will begin each morning together in the studio with discussions about art and artists, demonstrations on skill-building for drawing and painting, developing knowledge of the diversity of your artist's materials and exercises for expanding the imagination. Each afternoon will include individualized instruction and the opportunity to work in-depth on your paintings and drawings and the unfolding story that will evolve into each creation.
- A portfolio of resource materials and art books will be available throughout your stay.
- The studio will be open to you 24 hours a day.
- Yoga sessions will be offered each morning prior to breakfast.
Detailed Itinerary
Thursday Evening - October 23, 2008
Welcoming celebration, orientation and film in the studio following our first dinner featuring the delicious bounty of local and organic farms created by Cavallo Point's award-winning chef, Joseph Humphrey.
Friday - October 24
Today we will be working with a range of materials and techniques while drawing and painting in a state of continuous creativity. Using graphite from Germany, crayons from Switzerland and paper from France, you will be using your unique strokes to create form, volume, value, contrast and subtlety while discovering new ways of seeing, translating, enlarging, reducing, shaping, shadowing and manipulating negative and positive space. This evening gives you the opportunity to dine on your own or with new friends at one of the many wonderful restaurants in San Francisco or Sausalito.
Saturday - October 25
Today you will learn new ways to mix, paint and apply color by experimenting with mixed mediums and color formulas, applications through layering of strokes and images, and exploring the world of opaque and translucent paint, pencils and water-soluble color sticks from Austria, Switzerland and Italy. We will be painting and drawing on the finest of pure cotton paper, a surface so sensuous for absorbing and reflecting color and light. As the day unfolds, you will enter the world of mastering drawing and painting skills with a focus on magical realism, altered realities and visionary landscape. This day will conclude with a celebratory reception and dinner at Cavallo Point.
Sunday - October 26
Today we will gather in the studio for individual and group discussion, the opportunity to complete your works in progress and to begin new works that began to emerge while using your sketchbook for writing and drawing assignments over the past days. We will depart from the studio at 4PM.
