Definitions of Massage Terms
Here are definitions of massage terms used at the Healing Arts Center & Spa.
Cavallo Signature Massage
This massage blends several techniques: the long flowing strokes of Swedish, compressions and stretches of Thai massage, and holding movements. Choose one of our exclusive aromatherapy remedies based on the benefits you wish to achieve.
Herbal Poultices
Dried organic herbs are wrapped in muslin, steamed and applied directly to the body in a kneading action. These are used in the Stone and Herbal Poultice Massages.
Organic Massage
Also known as Swedish, the Organic Massage incorporates five different movements: long gliding strokes called Effleurage, kneading movements (Petri sage), friction, vibration, and cupping or hacking (also called Tapotament). The pressure varies depending on your needs and the therapist's technique. We use an organic blend of virgin olive oil, sunflower and avocado oils for this massage.
Cranial-Sacral
A subtle and gentle light touch therapy of cranial bones, the sacrum and energy-active points. The body's vitality and natural healing process are enhanced through the release of energetic constrictions and chronic tension by deeply relaxing and balancing the central nervous system. Effects may occur immediately or develop gradually over the next few days.
Stone Massage
Stone massage uses traditional Swedish strokes while the therapist holds warm stones in his or her hands (the stones become an appendage to the hand). The heat from the stones helps muscles relax more quickly, allowing for deeper muscle penetration.
Tandem Massage
Inspired by Ahbyanga, an Ayurvedic massage that uses brisk rhythmic strokes, Tandem massage is two therapists working on you in perfect synchronization, like one person with four hands. Very gentle and relaxing.
Thai Massage
Thai massage combines pressing, compressions and stretching. Often called passive or assisted yoga, this massage does not use oil and is performed through the clothes.
